The history of Jamia Hamdard begins with the establishment of a small Unani clinic in 1906 by Hakim Hafiz Abdul Majid, one of the renowned practitioners of Unani system of medicine of his time. Hakim Hafiz Abdul Majid had a vision to make Unani medicine a scientific discipline in order to distribute Unani medicines more effectively to patients. He named his venture "Hamdard" which means "sharing sympathy and pain for all". His illustrious son, Hakim Abdul Hameed, carried Hamdard's philosophy and objectives in independent India. Even at the time of the Partition of India in 1947, Hakim Abdul Hameed was dreaming of establishing a group of educational institutions to highlight the contribution of Islam and Islamic culture to Indian civilization and the development of Unani medicines for the treatment of diseases.
