Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) is conducted on a rotational basis by 17 National Law Universities (NLUs) in India. Candidates need to clear CLAT in order to secure admission into BA LLB (Hons), BSc LLB (Hons), BBA LLB (Hons), BSW LLB (Hons), BCom LLB (Hons) and LLM programmes on offer at the 17 NLUs.

 In 2015, CLAT core committee shared that this law entrance exam would be conducted only through the online mode. Thus, CLAT 2016 was conducted online and the same would be followed for CLAT 2017.

 CLAT 2017 would be conducted by Chanakya National Law University (CNLU), Patna.

 Exam dates for CLAT 2017 are such that the law entrance exam would be conducted on May 14, 2017. The online application process for CLAT 2017 would commence on January 1, 2017.

 The CLAT exam paper consists of different sections wherein a candidate’s aptitude is tested in subjects such as English, General Knowledge & Current Affairs, Elementary Mathematics, Legal Aptitude and Logical Reasoning.

 On the basis of a candidate's score in CLAT exam, he/she can secure admission to fill 632 LLM seats and 2352 LLB seats.


Minimum Criteria

CLAT 2017 eligibility criteria requires candidates to fulfill multiple aspects so that they can apply and thereafter appear for this law entrance exam. The eligibility criteria for CLAT are as follows:

A.     Educational Qualification:

 CLAT 2017 Eligibility Criteria for Five Year Integrated BA LLB (Hons) Course

 Candidates would be eligible to apply for CLAT 2017 if they have completed their 10+2 or equivalent examination with a minimum of:

  1. Forty Five percent (45%) marks in case of candidates belonging to General/OBC/Specially abled persons categories
  2. Forty percent (40%) marks in case of candidates belonging to SC/STcategory.

 Also, candidates appearing in the qualifying examination in March/April 2017 are also eligible to apply.

 CLAT 2017 Eligibility Criteria for LLM Course

 Candidates would be eligible to apply for LLM course admissions if they possess CLAT 2017 LLB or equivalent degree and have secured:

 

  1. Minimum of 55% marks in case of General/OBC/Specially abled persons categories
  2. Minimum of 50% marks in case of SC/ST category.

 Aspirants appearing in the qualifying examination in April/May 2017 are also eligible to apply for CLAT 2017. 

B.     Age Limit

 From the coming academic session onwards aspirants would be eligible for admission in NLUs basis their CLAT ranks if they fullfill the below mentioned CLAT age limit criteria:

Application Process

Step 1: Fill CLAT 2017 Application Form

 Candidates can apply for CLAT exam on the official website for CLAT 2017. No hard copy of CLAT Application Form and Information Brochure will be sold to a candidate under any circumstance.

Candidates can even purchase previous years' e-Question Papers of CLAT by making an online payment of Rs 250.

Step 2: Download CLAT 2017 Admit Card

Candidates can download their CLAT Hall-Ticket/Admit Card through their Login Account which they have to create at the time of registration. 

Candidates need to take the printout of their CLAT 2017 Admit Card and carry the same to the Examination Hall.

Step 3: Give CLAT 2017 Exam

CLAT 2017 will be a two hour exam. Candidates will have to give CLAT as an online exam. 

Subjects covered in the exam would include English including Comprehension, General Knowledge and Current Affairs, Elementary Mathematics, Legal Aptitude and Logical Reasoning.

Step 4: Check CLAT 2017 Result

As per the CLAT exam dates, the results for CLAT 2017 will be published on the official website. 

CLAT results will comprise of an overall merit list with names of candidates along with their CLAT scores and categories. Apart from this, state specific as well as all India merit lists shall be prepared for various categories like – Unreserved/ SC/ ST/ OBC/ Women/ PWD etc.

Candidates can view their CLAT results through their personal Login Account.

 Tie-breaking:

 If two or more candidates score equal marks in CLAT 2017, then the below mentioned procedure will be adopted to prepare the list of shortlisted candidates:

  • Higher marks in the section of legal aptitude in CLAT 2017
  • Higher age
  • Computerised draw of lots

Step 5: Appear for CLAT 2017 Counselling

The Counselling for CLAT 2017 will be conducted online after the results for the exam are announced. 

Candidates shortlisted for counselling will have to appear for online counselling to fill seats available in the participating NLUs. Candidates can take part in online counselling through their personal login account. 

Candidates need to pay Rs 50,000 as fee for counselling either online or offline by means of bank challan on the official website.

Exam Pattern

CLAT 2017 exam pattern: This law entrance exam will be of two hour duration. CLAT 2017 will be an online exam which will comprise of 200 multiple choice questions which candidates need to attempt to get shortlisted for admissions into the various participating law institutions.

 Candidates will be evaluated out of 200 marks in CLAT. The exam paper will comprise of questions from different areas of law such as:

CLAT 2017 Marking Scheme:

For every correct answer in CLAT 2017, candidates will be awarded one mark. However, for every wrong option selected by candidates, 0.25 marks will be deducted. 

Syllabus

The syllabus for CLAT 2017 as mentioned on the official website for the exam is as follows:

Section 1: English including comprehension

In this section, the proficiency in English will be tested on the basis of questions related to comprehension passages and grammar.

 In the comprehension section, candidates will be evaluated on the basis of their understanding of the passage, the central theme, meanings of words used in the passage etc.

 The grammar section requires correction of incorrect grammatical sentences, filling of blanks in sentences with appropriate words, etc.

 Section 2: General Knowledge and Currents Affairs

 In this section, candidates will evaluated on the basis of their general awareness including static general knowledge. Similar current affairs questions will test a candidate’s knowledge of current affairs.

Candidates need to be up-to-date with news and other topics discussed in mainstream media from March 2016 to April 2017.

 Section 3: Mathematics

 In this section, candidate’s knowledge on elementary Mathematics, that is, Maths taught up to Class X will be tested.

 Section 4: Legal Aptitude

 In this section, a candidate’s aptitude or interest in law, research aptitude as well as problem solving abilities will be tested. 

Section 5: Logical Reasoning

In this section, a candidate’s ability to identify patterns, logical links as well as rectify illogical arguments will be evaluated.

 This section of CLAT 2017 will include logical reasoning questions along the lines of syllogisms, analogies, logical sequences, etc. However, visual reasoning will not be tested.
