Central Board of Secondary Education has introduced changes in the English (Core) exam pattern for Class 12 students. On the basis of feedback received from the various stakeholders, the new paper will have only two passages in section A (Reading), instead of three passages earlier. The typology of questions have also been changed, the students have to attend 5 MCQs, 9 very short answer type questions, and 3 short answer type questions from passage one and 2 long answer type questions from passage two.
In Section A, total number of questions have been reduced from 24 to 19, and in total, it was reduced from 40 to 35. The board has also made available the revised marking scheme, and sample question paper. The student can check through the official website, cbse.nic.in.
Amid reports of students facing difficulty in attempting the entire question paper of English because it is very lengthy, the CBSE has revised the pattern of the class 12th English Core question paper in order to reduce the length. Important changes have been made to the section A i.e. the Reading Section of the CBSE class 12th English core paper (subject code 301). Let us discuss these changes in detail -
i. Number of passages Reduced from Three to Two- Against the existing pattern of three passages, now there will be two passages for the candidate to attempt in the class 12th English core paper (subject code 301).
ii. Length of passages now same- both the passages will be of equal length that is 800 to 900 words each. Previously the length of two passages was 1100 to 1200 words and the third passage was of 400 to 500 words.
iii. Typology of questions- In the existing pattern of the CBSE class 12th English core paper, 6-MCQs (1 mark each),16 Very short answer type questions including 1 on vocabulary for 1 mark, 1 short answer type question (3 marks), 1 Long answer type question (5 marks) were asked. In the revised pattern for class 12th English core paper (subject code 301), 5-MCQs (1 mark each) 9-Very short answer type questions including 3 Qs on vocabulary for 1 mark each 3-Short answer type question (2 marks each) will be asked from passage 1. From passage 2, only 2 Long answer type questions (5 marks each) will be put up to the students.
iv. Total number of questions reduced for Section A of the class 12th English core paper (subject code 301) - in the existing question paper, the number of questions in section A was 24. It has been reduced to 19 questions in the new pattern.
v. Total number of questions in the class 12th English core paper- The total number of questions in the class 12th English core paper for the year 2019 will be 35 against the existing number of 40 questions.
vi. In this way the CBSE has tried to reduce the length of the question paperso that all the candidates can attempt the entire paper in the given time.
vii. The CBSE has also given a sample question paper for the class XII English core paper subject code 301 so that the students can get familiar with the type of questions that will be asked in the CBSE class 12th English core paper (subject code 301).
